Spring Rocky Mountain Tailwater Trip

By Jason Lenz, Pro Staff

Our April trip out to the Colorado Rocky Mountains produced some monster fish again this year. We focused on fishing the tailwaters, as run-off had already kicked in by mid-April. The tailwaters were low, making the fishing pretty tough, but we were able to get into some really nice fish. It took a couple of days to develop patterns on the larger fishes movement, and on day three we landed some huge fish. The morning produced four fish between 27 and 28 inches and was one of our best days ever fly fishing. The key was to locate fish in heavier moving water, as it gave them less time to look over the fly. The fish were also pretty scattered throughout the river, so finding fish that were less pressured was also key. Read More

Spring Steelhead 2010

By Prostaff, Matt Lenz

Every February through May, in great anticipation, we start watching the weather all the way through the Great Lakes region. When the snow starts to melt, and the rains come in, it’s time to hit up the tributaries for the spring steelhead run.

We brought a novice fly fisherman with us this year to experience one of the best fights on a fly rod. On our way to the river in Western Wisconsin, it was explained that since he had never fought a fish this big, nor this crazy, it would likely take multiple hookups before landing one of these chrome beauties. .Read More

Green Bay Walleyes, March 2010

By Pro Staff, Jason Lenz

Stories of early season walleyes in the 13-14 pound range took us to Green Bay in March. We had been hearing about this fishery for years and decided to go check it out.

Our timing ended up being about a week too late, but we still managed to land 25 walleyes in two days of fishing. The fish all ranged from 18-24 inches. The majority of the fish were males, with a couple of spawned out females. Artificial baits out-fished the jig and minnow two to one, as the walleye seemed to key in on the larger baits. .Read More

10,000 Islands Area, Florida, March 2010

By Prostaff, Matt Lenz

We arrived in Florida to a rainy 45 degree cold front, perfect for fishing, if we were back in Minnesota. We knew it would be tough, but we were determined to get on some fish. We started off throwing flies in the back waters, targeting the mangroves. The tides were very low and the high tide was barely touching the mangroves, pushing the fish into deeper water.

When the tides started retreating, we decided to look to some flatter areas in hopes of getting some monster redfish. We were able to locate a couple of schools, but they were always on the move. We were able to turn a couple to chase the fly, but they just wouldn’t commit. We did get one small redfish off a jig and plastic shrimp. .Read More
